SAN GIMIGNANO, THE TOWN OF FINE TOWERS
San Gimignano, a small fortified city halfway between Florence and Siena, is famous for its architecture and for its beautiful medieval towers that make its appearance truly unique.
In their most prosperous period, the wealthy families of San Gimignano had 72 towers built as a symbol of their well-being and power; nowadays 14 of the towers remain and they are all visible in the city which contribute to making the atmosphere even more fascinating; this allowed the city to earn the nickname “Manhattan of the Middle Ages”.
The oldest one is the “Torre Rognosa”, which was erected at the beginning of the thirteenth century and the highest one is the “Torre del Podestà”, also called “Torre Grossa”, which is 54 meters high.
For the characteristical medieval architecture and the charm of its historic center it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also offers excellent local products such as saffron and white wine called “Vernaccia di San Gimignano”.
