HIDDEN TREASURES OF TUSCANY – MONTECARLO (LUCCA) WINE AND CULTURE
HIDDEN TREASURES OF TUSCANY – MONTECARLO (LUCCA)
Tuscany is full of perfectly preserved medieval towns, many of these even associate their name with internationally renowned wines and Montecarlo is a typical example, but what distinguishes this small town from many others is the fact that it has a real perfectly preserved fortress.
Visiting the Fortress means immersing yourself in the history of the territory, reliving the medieval atmosphere, recalling battles, sieges, wars between Guelphs and Ghibellines.
Montecarlo stands on an isolated hill, halfway between Montecatini and Lucca; all around, on a hilly area, a huge cultivation of olive trees and vines.
Here is where the Montecarlo DOC wine is produced 🍷 which we make taste in our Hotels and restaurants.
On the highest point of the hill there is the Fortress, built near the ruins of the Castle of Vivinaia, residence of the Countess Matilde of Canossa, destroyed together with the homonymous village by the Florentines fleeing in 1331.
Today it is a private residence that the owners make visit it personally.
