THE PINACOTHECA INSIDE THE FORMER BENEDICTINE MONASTERY OF SAN MICHELE AT PESCIA
Among the many historically and culturally important structures in Pescia there is undoubtedly the Pinacotheca located in the former Benedictine Monastery of San Michele.
The firsts evidences that hint at the existence of the Monastery date back to the year 1104 and over the centuries it first became a girls’ school in 1785 and subsequently a place intended for the promotion of cultural, educational and artistic activities.
In addition to the aforementioned Pinacotheca, the ancient former Monastery also houses the “Carlo Lorenzini State High School” and the Parish Church of San Michele.
It was inaugurated on March 14 2009 thanks to the help from the Conservatory of San Michele di Pescia Foundation after a long period of restoration; the Pinacotheca consists of three rooms (Refectory, Entrance and Hall) each rich with exhibited artistic works such as ancient paintings, antique furniture, chests, reliquaries and sacred vestments dating from the 15th century.
One of the most important paintings exhibited is undoubtedly the Last Supper by Fieravante Sansoni from 1625 and it is also possible to access the rooms above the church of San Michele and admire its splendid stained glass window.
