Proceeding northwards from the city of Pescia you will go through a green valley, the Valleriana, a landscape that by its nature has the characteristics of both the hill and the mountain and perhaps it is precisely thanks to this aspect that it was renamed by the Swiss writer Simonde de Sismondi, “Svizzera Pesciatina“.

Perched on the hills along the valley, small villages with typical stone walls and the roofs of a red brick, now extinguished by the sun and the weather, overlook the vegetation: they are the ten castles of the Valleriana.

Castelvecchio was undoubtedly a central node for the viability of the time: to the south the valley is closed by the marshy area of Fucecchio and therefore it is only up the river and going between these villages and castles that the traveler and the pilgrim could reach the Apennines, a sort of “highway” for walking in the dry.
